Hello and thank you for stopping by our new website. Stellar Quines has been making theatre for over 25 years and we have always evolved our work to best serve the Quines in our constellation.
As we come through what has been such an extraordinary time, when so much unfairness has been exposed, it feels absolutely right that we should be launching this renewed brand and website for the company. I’m still relatively new to my job as Artistic Director and CEO here but I have been having some powerful conversations with the team and the people we work with. There are a lot of things I don’t know yet about the future of Stellar Quines but I wanted to share what I do know so far.
Going forward, Stellar Quines will be refining our work as an intersectional feminist theatre company, which means all the work we do will seek to address gender inequality from the understanding that gender inequality interacts and over laps with other forms of social inequality (such as racism, homophobia, islamophobia, ableism, classism, transphobia etc).
In the next few months, we will be asking new questions about what our role might be in a feminist recovery from the pandemic, while also looking at the impact of our current work so we can be part of the movement for a fairer society in Scotland and beyond.
We hope Stellar Quines will be a home and a platform for intersectional feminist creatives who want to make excellent theatre and to dismantle the patriarchy. It is our job to carve out space where we can amplify voices that might not otherwise be heard.
As Audre Lorde said “The master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house” – and so Stellar Quines is ready to innovate, not just with the shows we put on stage but also with how we make shows, how we make connections with people, how we support practitioners and artists and how we take care of each other along the way.
We are committed to best practice in theatre making. This is about progress, not perfection. To widen the reach of this work, we will share what we are doing and the questions we are asking with you on our website and, in time, through our Blog.
We will democratise the way we choose our projects and collaborators, bringing greater transparency to the commissioning and programming process so that we can engage a more diverse range of artists and audiences.
We will build meaningful, long term relationships with communities where we offer outstanding participatory arts activities co-designed with participants. Those relationships will be the foundation of our work, feeding upwards and nourishing the Stellar Quines team and the creatives we work with, just as much as we aim for our work to nourish communities.
Some of this work is already here, some is still to come. We hope you will join us on this journey, as an audience member, collaborator or supporter of our work.
Thanks for stopping by.
